چکیده

The histological diagnosis in 77 cases of the nephrotic syndrome occurring in Uganda is presented. Plasmodium malariae was detected in 31 cases and all but one of these showed diffuse proliferative or focal glomerulonephritis. Pure membranous glomerulonephritis was seen in nine cases; none of these had parasitaemia. Children (63%) had a higher incidence of parasitaemia than adults (40%) in the cases examined.

Nephrotic syndrome in monkey infected with human quartan malaria.

A splenectomized aotus monkey infected with human quartan malaria (Plasmodium malariae) developed oedema and proteinuria. Histological examination revealed a generalized diffuse glomerulonephritis and immunofluorescent staining showed granular deposits of IgM in the glomeruli. The pathological picture resembled that shown by human patients with the quartan malaria nephrotic syndrome.

Malaria prophylaxis and immunosuppressant therapy in management of nephrotic syndrome associated with quartan malaria.

The evidence that is available for a possible immunological basis for the nephrotic syndrome associated with quartan malaria (Kibukamusoke, 1966; Kibukamusoke, Hutt, and Wilks, 1967; Soothill and Hendrickse, 1967) prompted a study of the possible value of removing the sensitizing agent (the malaria parasite). The use of antimalarials, however, has failed to produce any immediate therapeutic ben...

Concurrent hyperreactive malarial splenomegaly and quartan malarial nephropathy - Plasmodium malariae revisited.

Chronic immunological complications of malaria include hyperreactive malarial splenomegaly (HMS) and quartan malarial nephropathy. HMS represents an abnormal immunological response to recurrent malarial infections as a result of defective T suppressor cell regulation. On the other hand, quartan malarial nephropathy, which usually presents in childhood with nephrotic syndrome, is not responsive ...

Quartan malaria-associated childhood nephrotic syndrome: now a rare clinical entity in malaria endemic Nigeria.

BACKGROUND The study determined (i) whether or not quartan malaria nephropathy (QMN) is still a major cause of childhood nephrotic syndrome (CNS) in Nigeria, (ii) secondary causes other than QMN and their associated glomerular pathology and (iii) renal and patient outcome. METHODS The study was a prospective non-randomized study of consecutive cases of secondary CNS. Patients with idiopathic ...

High Steroid Sensitivity among Children with Nephrotic Syndrome in Southwestern Nigeria

Recent reports from both Caucasian and black populations suggest changes in steroid responsiveness of childhood nephrotic syndrome. This study was therefore undertaken to determine the features and steroid sensitivity pattern of a cohort of black children with nephrotic syndrome. Records of children managed for nephrotic syndrome from January 2008 to April 2013 were reviewed. Details including ...
